In order to prioritize our development pipeline, we posted a blog two weeks ago opening the discussion to our users about their top three requests for ROBLOX.  While we are still carefully reading each reply, we wanted to point out a few exceptional responses, along with our developer feedback, so you can see what we are working on. Below we have selected several great comments from our players. John Shedletsky, ROBLOX’s Creative and Content Lead, provides his response in italics.

Charl3s7: It would be awesome to have a light object that attaches to a brick, and then the brick would emit light.

John: If I were to put together a list of “most-asked for ROBLOX features”, dynamic lighting would definitely be in the top three. ROBLOX’s Lead Graphics Developer, Simon Kozlov, has spent a fair amount of time researching this feature. We think we’re converging on a good strategy for adding this functionality. However, at the moment we’re focusing our graphics development effort on allowing all ROBLOX places to have 10x as many parts as they do now.

leolion113: Allow for users to find what rank someone is from an ingame script (E.g. IsInGroup (1337, “Soldier”)).

John: Expanding scripter access to our social APIs from Lua is a very high “bang for the buck” feature. This is something that is simple to implement, but gives place creators a ton of power. As groups become more central to the ROBLOX experience, features like this will become ever more important.

Anynomous: Ability to test your clothes before you buy them, without having to see someone else wears it.

John: ROBLOX Engineer, Ben Tkacheff, is currently working on extensions to the ROBLOX Lua API that will make it much easier to alter characters’ appearances in-game. This will pave the way for a “try before you buy” feature and it will also allow power users to script this for their own game.

toon2: I strongly encourage you at Roblox to take what Simon Kozlov did with his Hack week demo and implement it into the game in some form. Many commenters commented that they were astonished by how much better Roblox looked with his lighting, and were inspired to do new things with it. Secondly, when I saw the video thumbnail on Shedleskey’s SFOTHIV, I hoped that you would soon put it on the site for players to use. Finally, a lot of people had uploaded meshes through ROBLOX Studio into their games. Sure, they made ROBLOX seem less brick-related, but they were inventive. I personally don’t care for it too much, but I’ve noticed it to be a common interest, along with custom animations.

John: Users want better lighting. This has been one of the top three most requested features. Video thumbnails are actually available for players to use right now!

The ROBLOX staff is divided on the issue of whether or not to allow players to upload meshes. Moderation difficulties aside, some of us feel that custom meshes could undermine the ROBLOX aesthetic of “what you see is what you get”.  For instance, large meshes won’t collide as you expect them to. On the other hand, when confronted with this type of choice, we almost always land on the side of giving more power and creative freedom to our game developers, so it’s hard to tell what the future holds here.

Isoclism Developers:  If you click on Record Video, X makes your Body invisible to the camera, Z is to slightly pan the camera to the left, and C is to slightly pan the camera to the right.

John: Better control over the camera for creating cut-scenes is actually something ROBLOX Engineer, Tyler Mullen, has done some work on. I think the biggest feature here is to allow the ROBLOX video recorder to record “under” the game UI, so you can get an unobstructed picture in your videos.

Isoclism Developers: More features in the forums: a. Editing Posts after publishing them
b. Allow for Image Signatures with moderation

John: Upgrading the existing forums is on the Web Team roadmap for 2012.

Isoclism Developers: Add more GUI Fonts. We only have 3 right now.

John: Yes. We agree – more power to content creators.

Isoclism Developers: Allow for removal of some of the Core Gui’s.

John: Yes. Almost all of them should be removable.

Isoclism Developers: Add more Social Layer API’s for Roblox’s Lua Scripting program. Like maybe players can send messages in-game.

John: More social APIs – we agree about that too. I would be concerned with the potential for mass-spam that “send message” functionality would unlock; however I’m sure there are ways to mitigate this, like a quota system, for example.

Due to the mass number of responses, we will continue to post user comments over the next few weeks with our developer feedback.  We do take your comments seriously, and our goal is to incorporate your opinions into ROBLOX.

  1. Make the game available for offline users. limit to what they can do, but make bricks available and let testing be offline. your account doesnt need to be in the offline version, and my models should be backed up on your computer as well.

  3. Multiplayer Studio Mode (MSM)

    There needs to be a Multiplayer Studio mode. Similar to personal build servers, but players would be able to use Roblox Studio as well. The owner of the place would invite people in to build. If someone makes a change to the place while the owner isn’t there, the owner has to approve the place update before it comes into effect. There should also be a message thing so the person can tell what they updated.

  4. Make custom character animations easier to create. I know this has already been addressed, but I really think that custom character animations would improve games.

    Make the little Comment button where I’m typing not cover what I say.

    Ability to rotate in 3D around models/hats/gears/shirts/pants to preview them before you buy. Sometimes people want to see what’s on the back of a shirt, or what the back of a hat looks like.

    Better moderation. I think that better moderation is important. When someone gets a ban/warning, I think they should have an option to contact the mod that banned them for whatever it is. On one of my alts, I was banned for posting “Bump” followed by random numbers on a forum. The account got terminated for it. My guess is that the filter thought it was a phone number, as I later counted the numbers and saw that it was ten digits. I was unable to email to appeals@roblox.com because I do not have an email.

    These are three of my ideas to make Roblox better.

  5. I personally think that if you delete an item that you bought,you can get some money back. Many users have bought things they dont like and want to delete it, like me, and I want to have some money back so its not a COMPLETE waste. Maybe just 25%-75% off.

    • I would personal use a Formula for that based on the Current roblox market price, The amount of Hours that you have the Item and the item category.

I think should be emotions for humanoids, for example, if you were to build a city game, instead of seeing a block like person standing completly still, you would see him doing emotions, like reading a news paper, or sitting on the side walk looking around, maybe even getting a taxi to pick him up. SO it seems that real robloxians to humanoids would be pretty cool. Just a thought – sorry for the repost i did that on someone elses.

      But this will require a lott of work. Just because roblox has Block characters and five main parts (Head, Torso, Arms, Legs and Neck)

      Those main parts need to form the Emoticon ? I wouldn’t think so. Then they need to create more Face structure. And also reading a news paper isn’t a Emotion but a Action..

  9. Right so it’s not a website request but can you bring roblox rally to liverpool You see, my parents can’t afford to go to SAN FRANK SISCO!!! IM SO UNLUCKY I LIVE IN LIVERPOOL we never have any really good events on ever and I only know 4 people on roblox in real life so please read

  10. I think there should be a player to player trade system sort of like the party but you can trade items you have for items you want. Not just limited. Also this should include a clack panel so that the item you click is accepted into trade. Another benifit of this is that there should be a trade fee maybe of… 10R$ or less. Also the party features like being able to actively chat would still work accept for the fact that there can be more than one player.

  11. 1. If there isn’t one already, make a “brick count” feature in ROBLOX Studio, so that we know how many bricks we have, so that we know if there are too many and the game will be laggy or not.
    2. Somehow make it a bit easier for NBCers to get money, I understand that you need Builders Club in demand for ROBLOX to continue, but make it so that users can play some type of mini-game, where they get 1-20 tix every time they play, and they can play up to 5-10 times a day. Maybe make it so that they pay 1-5 tix to play the game so that they could lose money.
    3. I know the problem with NBC trade money with 2 people singly, but if you get scammed, it should be your fault, not the new feature.

  12. One of my requests would be to make the catalog page scroller similar to the one on the friends list, where you can type in the page number and it goes to that page. Its kind of annoying when I want to continue my search in the catalog another day, but I would have to start all over again to get to the same page I was on the previous day. It would be nice to also put that on the page where you view the Stuff that a person has (like hats or clothing). Sometimes I am looking through a my favorite fashion designer’s clothes, and I buy one on page 23, then I have to go all the way back to page 23 from page one after I return to the user’s profile.

(continued) BUT, if in-game buying occured, the player could just go to a specific area offering the clothing (or clicking on a gui) and up would come a screen asking the player whether or not they want to buy it. The owner could also toggle whether or not the clothing must be bought outside of the game, in-game, or both.

I think that buying specific clothes (if the owner of the game has the article theirself) would be good, for instance, nowadays on a war game, if it offers vip, and a player wants to buy it in the middle of a game, they have to get out of the window, go to the owners profile (or type in the url, which takes awhile) in the meantime people are killing the player in the game.

  15. So the whole Linux thing has been thrown in the trash? You put it on the list in the example, you should at least put some sort of response to the idea.

  16. Create a Google Chrome web app to play Roblox online. This will make Roblox users with Chrome OS to play Roblox.

  18. Yea that would be cool.Also in the stamper tool make it have separte weapon like a MP5 or some gun’s or even just 1 M9.

  19. I think there should be cameras that display on the side of a brick, so in a group place there could be a huge moniter showing the whole building. that would be cool.

  20. Please, focus more on Apple computers. I cant take screenshots on them, or video because its only for windows. I am an Apple craz I would like to see you focusing more on Apple.

  23. Buy better servers so the servers run smoothly with lots of bricks and moving parts. You should be able to afford top of the line servers

    • Go buy bc then maybe roblox will get more money and they will get better servers

  24. You guys should make it so that theres less lag in games with a lot of scripts/bricks. Then I can have fun on ROBLOX :D

    • I would like to know why making a Trade System wasn’t a Top 3, most people had that other than less lag.

  26. Place Version History Improvement:

    There could be an image by the version when you are looking through the old versions of your place. So that way you don’t have to click all the different versions to find the one your looking for.

  27. I think having 10x as many bricks would be nice.
    By that do you mean it will increase the fps for other users or the server will be able to handle more? I don’t think the people who are asking for less lag know what causes it.
    Another thing would be to make it for more systems, like Linux, ios and possibly consoles like ps3.
    Gaming consoles would be able to handle it unless we are talking about the Wii. I think this game is going down a very good path and you guys are doing great!

  31. I think you should find more music. Sure Carmeldansen will go great in any GoW wanna be game,(sarcasm) but the thing is, we don`t have any music to make the moment more intense. Sure you have ones that are sort of good for wrestling, but not good to intensify the moment. There are plenty of public domain songs, we just have yet to find them.

  33. useing roblox shortcut window is hard to log in mostly after the reCAPTCHA update. if u can fix/make captcha better i would love that

  35. You should make the quota system so players can edit in-game messaging and also allow players to lock their inbox in the in-game inbox of the game.

      I was 1 R$ off from getting a cool hat I wanted. I don’t care how little amount, I just want some.

      • Its good to know someone is supporting my ideas… If you post something like this on the forums, the first replies would be BC and NBC people saying NBC deserve nothing or deserves enough.

  39. I think we should have it so vehicals can travle to other games, this would make group wars fair as usually the group that owns the battle field will have the upper hand. Also trade system.

    • Haha. Alright. I’m gonna to respond on this one as a coder, programmer. First of all when you wish to implent this we need to save all those Parts to a location at a Sub-Server that also can use the Second server (The place to Teleport). When you include that and then let’s say teleport a tank to the Place with a Admin script inside it. Then I would have total control in a other Game. Disable Scipts. Not a Option. Because then also the Shoot functions wouldn’t work. Censor some Events like Chatted ? That is against Roblox Creativity idea..

  40. I, being a player who commonly uses the ROBLOX Group System, feel that you should give Group Owners the option to have an extra 2 or 3 ranks for their Group. Although the full 9 ranks can be enough at times, having the ability to buy an extra few would be very helpful. Even if for a higher price that 1 – 9, having more would help. Another thing is that you should is put the blank baseplate (Large black block) from the “Reset Place” option back. By now you will probably have guessed that I build. Having to remove terrain every time I want to build with BLOCKS is extremely annoying. At the moment, I have had to save a blank baseplate place to file and just upload it to where I intend to build.

    • You know you can delete terrain superfast? just type this in a script or the commandbar:
      workspace.Terrain:Clear()

  41. Could you a sound mute like sometimes i want to listen to music when im killing peopel with my sword lol but i hate it that when i jump or the sword mkaes noises it mkaes me not want to listen to music.

  42. I am a user on Roblox, will a new insert be created, so that we can still insert things that are difficult to create, also I believe that an admin script with all basic commands should be giving to creators of games being that it is a bit hard to script

  43. Allow for vidoes to be uploaded directly to ROBLOX from your files. They would all be moderated like videos for the gallery image on places, but these would be viewable on your profile, too. Likewise, you could link your youtube channel to My Roblox, and connect approved vidos to your video gallery. You would be able to add description, tags, etc.

    • Can you please make the terrain water on the site thigy were you make the terrain? And aslo make it so you can has a trade system on roblox so you don’t get scammed and it’s a fair trade and have a “donate to this person feature” That would be so awsome to have!

  44. I would like the hackers and exploiters to stop. Also trolls. Why doesn’t roblox hire some player mods? They could help out, stopping hackers, since roblox is so big and popular. I also mean trolls.

    • I agree. Trolls, and exploiters can be annoying, and ruin the game for other players.[Hackers are the same as exploiters, unless they are directly attacking the website or ROBLOX’s servers.

  45. Dear members of ROBLOX, My opinion on the top Three wishes would be; Physics Improvement on character. I fall like a statue. But bricks have very good physics.. My next wish would be… A character improvement as in, when we Dress up we can have a 3D editor Which allows you to Look from the Left, Right, Rear, and front to see how your character looks, my last reason is. A Smoother Pan, in building it allows you to Pan smoothly.

  46. From the replies John has given to the feedback received I can see that ROBLOX has a bright future. Yes, meshes are hard to moderate but perhaps introduce a fee for creating custom meshes, as they did with the video thumbnail feature, that’d deter a lot of possible ‘trouble makers’. With the font idea proposed by the “Isoclism Developers”, perhaps make it so users can upload their own fonts that they can then give out for free, or keep to themselves.

  47. Roblox should have a robloxian of the week. Not just based on knockouts, but based on their overall profile.

      • Why would you. You can make a Sptlight ofcourse. But don’t make from everthing a Componention. We already have a Contest feature. Why do you wish to make a battle on Roblox “I’m the best Robloxian this week..”

        I would say. Keep that part of Roblox like it is. A community and not a fight to the Throne.

  50. yes id like to ask you people at the roblox studioes are you ganna try and release a 360 type of roblox building game like monjang did with there game (minecraft) hope i can say that but um you think that would be a good idea or a bad one

    server space : uploading more meshes means more

    money needed.

    • Haha. Roblox has a lott of data. We must agree on that Subject. But meshes won’t take that much space. The only thing is that Normal users like you and me don’t have the software to create those kind of Files. Also Meshes isn’t a #1 point at Roblox at the moment. They wanna to speed there Engine to what it is capable of to include new things . Then they know for sure. We won’t have any Lagg inside the Game with this Feature.

  53. 1. User should do just the “Try before you buy” Feature on Normal Builders club for 3 or 4 Days So people that have tried it could actually buy it for more, more and more. It would be very usefull.
    2. We should be able to add Auto messages in games that is auto-added In Workspace.

    • No. I personal would say use the Notification System. You know the Slide when you have a Friend Request inside a Game. Or maybe a Mailbox Coregui object.

      That would be the Target. If you add them to Workspace they can be read by all. And then I know what is going to happen with all those Players that wanna to say something at once.
