How to Build a FPS in 15 Minutes with ROBLOX

ROBLOX FPS ScreenshotBy the time the ROBLOX Content Team finished developing ROBLOX Base Wars FPS, we had accumulated a number of powerful scripts that quickly turn a standard ROBLOX game into a class-based, first-person shooter (FPS). Recognizing the power of the scripts, we packaged them in a FPS plugin for ROBLOX Studio and put them to the test.

Do they make it possible to create an FPS in 15 minutes?

The answer is a resounding yes. If you don’t believe it, watch this video, in which ROBLOX’s own Luke Weber and Rohan Karnik go from nothing to a fully functioning FPS game in 15 minutes. (We’ve edited the video for brevity.)

The plugin takes care of many FPS essentials, including the first-person camera, five character classes, leaderboards and killfeeds, and capture and spawn points. It lets you focus your efforts on level design; we recommend you read more about that here and take note of these quick thoughts from our developers:

This is the fun part – and where we spent most of our 15 minutes while building the demo level. You’ll want to insert a baseplate or generate random terrain to get started. Then, you can surf through our catalog of millions of digital models published by other ROBLOX users to get scenery and buildings for your map. You can, of course, make your own, but you’ll end up spending more than 15 minutes.

While it’s fun to experiment with bizarre level design, we recommend you think about the goals of your game and plan a layout to match them. For instance, you might want each team to have unique, but balanced advantages so player strategy is different based on their team. With that in mind, you could give one team the benefit of elevation and the other team the advantage of more cover.

  5. A plug in? I’d rather just use my copy of the game, take all the vital componants out, and insert them 1 by 1. Anyway, I hate how everyone’s bickering about this because they think that 2008 was perfect, and with anything more, or anything less, they feel the game disrupted, and like they need to have a little hissy fit because the game is making improvements.

    • Every time I try to drag it into Roblox Studio it says “Document could not be opened” please help me with this. PM me what’s wrong onto my account “Kevdude12″

      • There’s no problems wiht free models, really. What we get at is places that use completely or a large percent of free models. Those games getting popular makes us OC builders angry.

    • I’m sick and tired of people complaining about free models, they were created to be USED, not to sit around and collect virtual dust and cause people to be scolded via their use.

      • Stickmasterluke used the free models as a DEMONSTRATION of how to make a quick FPS in 15 minutes. He did it for your satisfaction. Look at his own games, he clearly does not use free models.

  11. Roblox, you guys, can you make a better afford on I Mac’s roblox studio, it always lag so murph ever time I go in it does not work or freezes, roblox please improve you roblox studio and also make the script more easier is so hard you don,t even understand what to type.

  12. Well i like the feature and have used it but it still needs some updates to it. 1. is that the weapons do not show up. and 2. it would break. you need to fix these things.

  16. I downloaded the file unzipped it then i go in to studio open it and it just say cannot open this file…

      • You need to extract the filed, cut the file that is inside another file, paste into the plugin folder

  18. Yeah….you can create a FPS game in 15 minuites…..albeit a lowly detailed one with basic scripts.

    • They do, You just need a FSP Weapon When you click classes they dont work sometimes.

  24. Could you NOT make it a plugin. Intead just make the scripted guns or JUST the FPS gun effect scripts And also the gui.Becuase people who are smart enough to do this but not enough to create thier own games are poeple who do not deserve front page. I just really want the FPS gun effect. pls.

    • same here! when i try to open them up it does nothing and the capture points dont work! theres a bug in tht script!

  31. oh man roblox there is a glitch in roblox that makes you go in two places at once well i did that glitch on actident and i trap in a place while its not in a window so im traped please help please just patch up the glitch

    its realy easy but dont do it or you will end up like me ok its this while your in a lagy game press follow on some one and you will be in both games i did it on my bro on actsident while im was
    in the game and it broke roblox and says im still in im hopeing that the time limit of being still kicks in and kick me out of there but i dont know just plz help

  32. I remember the days when it actually took a good builder to make a good game. Now every noob in the century who has no clue what Lua is will have a famous game. >.< And they don't even deserve it! I guess it will be and a few others who will keep the legacy of not using freemodels and creating games from scratch. *Sigh*

    • Agreed, I wish it still was 07 they changed so much of ROBLOx studio, that I’m so confused…I’m still learning the studio again, because of a new update, 2.0 got so mad when I just learned how to use the first one!!!,

    • Well,they ARE just making an example…and remember most of the noobs that dont know what a LUA is probably dont know how to get onto Roblox Studios :3

    • I hear you man… Make all my games from scratch with no free models and the game will be epic and not be visited much at all… And yet Free Modeled games are always on front page… Roblox Game Visitors, where is your logic?!

  33. There are way too many glitches with this. It doesn’t work. It enters all of the stuff in, yes, but the GUI’s don’t work, the teams and character menu and leaderboard don’t work, and the guns won’t go in the starterpack.

  52. This is great, but the dissect-ability is very low. Someone may want to only have little sections of the game, but it requires too much work, with only about 1/3 of results expected.

  53. No offence but its not really building because all you doing is just opening a plugin and just get loads of free models and changing the colour of it then you done it >_>

    • So true… what is roblox coming too, it used to be about aming a fun game that you built with your own flesh and blood. a few really good examples are, “Base War”, “Heli War”, “Build To Survive”. and many more. plus the current FPS framework is crappy and the meshes need to be better. try ugrading the darn servers! for less lag which happens even too the best computers

    • No, they created the frist script, and useing free models is not bad. they were created for that exact reason, so you can create a game in 15 mins!

    • Ugh. I know, right? My place is taking a week to make, and is probably gonan end up being more fun. But WHERE DO ALL THE PLAYERS GO!?!? To free modeled places like this. I know RJ and SML were all doing this in demonstration, but seriously, free models demean hardworking place builders like myself. Makes me furious. >:C

  57. Roblox make a video that shows how to install FPS plugin AND how to make them to be were the terrain plugins are. THIS WOULD B VERY HELPFULL

    • You CAN change the scripts,
      and besides it Helps make some people Make Better Games.
      So it helps those who need it, People STILL can make FPS games by themselves (OR CHANGE WHAT THE PLUGIN DOUS)

  65. I can download the plugin but I cannot seem to use it. I try to upload the Plugin Folder via Studio but it doesn’t work.

    • Same with me. I can download it and save the Plugin but when I drag it into Studio, it just says “Failed to insert Plugin” and it won’t work. Can anyone help? I imagine it must be a very good plugin otherwise.

  69. Roblox really does need to improve how first person looks. It should at least have an animated thing with your hand actually showing and looking up and down.

      • You access the ROBLOX Plugins folder on your hard drive and drag it into the folder, then open up ROBLOX Studio :)
