ROBLOX Hosting a Hackathon at Game Conference 2012

RGC 2012 Hackathon LogoDo you consider yourself an elite ROBLOX game designer? Do your friends secretly marvel at your architectural competence and scripting prowess? Can you produce under the pressure of limited time? If so, we invite you to bring your laptop to ROBLOX Game Conference 2012 and join us for a continuous, all-day Hackathon.

The ROBLOX Game Conference 2012 Hackathon will let attendees take a break from the festivities and enjoy a session of ROBLOX creation. Every 20 or so minutes, a ROBLOX developer will unveil a new puzzle, challenging users to complete it in a given period of time. While we can’t give away any specifics, we’ll be asking competitors to do things like create a new GUI (graphic user interface) or game effect, script a specific sequence of behaviors, solve programming and math puzzles, and take advantage of a ROBLOX feature that’s not commonly used.

Attendees can participate in as many 20-minute challenges as they’d like. We’ll be giving away prizes to participants and, better yet, projecting a leaderboard that shows who’s successfully completed the most Hackathon puzzles – and who’s the most skilled user in attendance.

To prepare ourselves for the ROBLOX Game Conference 2012 Hackathon, we’re going to be holding our own mock Hackathon at the ROBLOX headquarters this afternoon. We’ll let you know how it goes soon.

  1. Man, i wish they would make it at a place closer to people like me like because my parents wont always let me go over to these things because they are so far away. I wish they could have some of the staff go to some of the places that we are close to and have the other staff members go to other places that othere people are close to. My parent wont let drive through lik 10 different states for a game conference.

  10. Programming contest..sounds like a dream. Too bad I live in Canada. Also, I’d feel a bit odd being 16 there, aha.

  11. Well…..I think even though i live in california it should be hosted in texas where its not closer to either side of The U.S.A and everybody except texas will have to travel the same distance!

    • Exact same thing with me. When I’m not being lazy, I’m an awesome builder, but count me out of scripts. Too complicated for my age.

  44. There should be a roblox building in every state.
    If so then I would come to the RGC.

  45. I hope ROBLOX comes to terms that not all of us are in the west. There should be another team devoted to hosting in the East, more than half of ROBLOXians are in the east and they are advertising it one heck of a lot.

  46. Do the east coast! every one there which is about 25% of all players. In CA there is about 5%… When you joined a game an made friends with someone and asked thier timezone so you can arrange to meet they ususally say 1 UK time or 2 EST. THAT is the east coast and even farter east.

  47. You need to hold one in New England or generally the northeast to grab those users. I’d of gone to the rally and the confrence but I live in Maine.

    • They need to do one in REGULAR England. Preferably the South-West but Bristol or London would be good too.

  64. Okay, the economy is bad enough. My parents do not have enough money to fly to San Francisco. Also, the houses in San Francisco are expensive so I wouldn’t be able to move there anyway.

    • It’s in San Francisco because that’s where the HQ is. Why waste money that could go to making Roblox better, on flying all employees and renting a place in other locations. Why does it matter anyway? It’s 10 hours long anyway.

  66. Roblox is the best online free game! I just wish you could translate this to java if thats possible, So it would work on Older powerpc macs and linux
    Or maybe Make roblox a universal binary for older macs atleast. Thanks for reading this Roblox team i hope you consider some of these ideas :)

  68. Stop thinking about yourselves and pick a logic location they wont come to your state but somewhere like NYC I dont live there but its Populated enough and has many ways of getting there I live in Philadelphia there should be one in LA and NYC every year so EVERYONE has a chance to go

    • I think that Roblox can only stay at that one place because I think that’s the only place they can have the Game Conference…
