By a long shot, the talk of the week was water. We’ve already seen a number of interesting creations using ROBLOX’s physically simulated water, and we’re excited to see more users take advantage of it in the near future. Read on for ROBLOX users’ thoughts on the kinds of water-based creations they’d like to see in the future.

ROBLOX Game Conference updates

In the last couple weeks, we’ve announced some details regarding the upcoming ROBLOX Game Conference 2012. Most notably, we’re going to be hosting a “Hackathon,” where attendees can participate in ROBLOX challenges and puzzles to earn prizes. And bragging rights.

We recently released a virtual Potato Cannon for ROBLOX and tested it against good, old-fashioned, mathematical formulas. Turns out it’s really accurate, with almost identical projectile measurements in the game. Don’t be surprised to see rocket-speed potatoes.

The 15-minute FPS challenge

A few weeks ago, we challenged ourselves to create a first-person shooter (FPS) in 15 minutes with the help of ROBLOX’s FPS plugin. While we don’t encourage our users to only spend 15 minutes on their games, the video we produced speaks to the simplicity of the FPS plugin. We hope it lets you spend more time on level design.

ROBLOX on Social Networks

Shortly before the release of ROBLOX’s water, we polled our Facebook fans about what types of water-based games they were most looking forward to creating and playing. There was a large demand for waterparks, Titanic-themed games, islands and underwater exploration, survive-the-flood games and boat racing; if you want to make it big as a ROBLOX builder, consider something along those lines. The players are just patiently waiting for it!

My favorite answer? “Waterpark.” Of course, in the spirit of ROBLOX, the user went on to say, “then blow it up.”

We also asked our Twitter followers what they had created after having water at their disposal for 24 or so hours, and got to see a variety of boats, games and scenery.

  2. Hey, ROBLOX. Finally, that epic water came out! And, I don’t want to be pushy, but can you hurry up with the Trade System? The whole ROBLOX is buzzing about it, and if it comes out soon, my friend won’t quit.

  5. Yes i know im from youtube and minecraft, ive come to check roblox out. They add water. Already added from miencraft.

      • not really bro Minecraft is better than Roblox because it’s survival, the way you build things is more realistic and harder then Roblox and barely any five year olds, seven year olds, and other little kid n00bs play Minecraft

  11. Hey, great with water – Sadly it’s kinda hard to insert in hilly places or… actually any places, because it cannot be very smoothy or flat.. look like water, flow and so on. But great!

    Something I’d love, I think alot other ppls could want this too: Making “custom” Terrain-cells!

    Like with the :SetCell and :GetCell, just like :SetCustomCell(x,y,z,Material,Type,Orientation,{TextureId1,TextureId2…,TextureId6})

    Then, the last parameter is a table where you can insert the 6 sides? The :GetCell could get an extra returning-parameter, which was a boolvalue if the brick was “custom”.

  12. Robloxians have been building boats that work on water. (wooden blocks with stone stabilizers) Could Roblox now add a vehicle seat that can be added to such creations in order to steer them? Or, even better, add working sail blocks and rudder blocks which can be controled using wiring switchs?

      fine ideas, seems that you’ve tried out the water more than I have yet.

      An answer to your question is that you could make them yourself – Or get a scripter to help you :D

      The Wiring-section is just normal blocks with an ?-value or something to define for the wiring- and configuration-tool, that it’s a wireable model. // Then just head on, velocity all the way… or… was it…? *Throwing a roblox part irl… velocity!.. ok, nvm*

  18. Water is a MAJOR improvement! Visit my place for trying it out and riding boats!

    • I’ve never been to Roblox studio, but when I build at my place on Roblox with water, terrain below ISN’T destroyed. But you were right about the water being uneven and blocky. But blockiness… isn’t that why Roblox has “blox” in it?

    • I don’t think that’s a big achievement … And I kind of doubt anyone cares…

  21. make terrain leaves! then u can have a tree/forest generator! and put some stone in the terrain generator so that its more realistic, with actualy mountains, and bedrock, instead of continous dirt. plus, plze make the water a little transparent.

  22. Yeah the water’s very nice but can you get around to fixing the exploit first, so that when we make our own places with this great feature everyone doesn’t just hack up servers and steal them?

  26. Yeah, the new ROBLOX water is GREAT! I used it during the beta testing and I have improved upon a waterpark I made, I have eventually came up with the title “The Dark Waterpark”, since it is a very dark and sinister place, but its still a waterpark, there are creatures in the bodies of water too, some scale the underwater floor and some float, I even figured out that grass can go up or down in water, therefor I made a fish that could follow you on the surface of water and in the deep depths.   27. I cannot wait for the ROPES, I will e surely making a game with the ropes, water, terrain, and possibly even make a boat that can float in the water. xD

  29. Dear Roblox,

    Now that you can’t build in studio mode with your character it’s 10x harder to do so with building with bricks and not stamper tool. Like there is a few things that I like with the stamper tool like the new water but ROBLOX was alot better in the 09 days.

    • Lionblaze1212,you can build in studion mode with a character, just hit tools, then test, then play solo

      And exactly what was better? These new features are major improvements that roblox is finally adding! And when adding cool features you have to expect issues! They will fix the bugs one day.

      Guys like you are annoying. Saying that old roblox is better. Old roblox was so boring that so many left. Scripting was so inefficient, and you could not even make your own GUI! And there were fewer possibilities.
      More features = more creativity

  34. In my oppinion, these updates aren’t really needede at the time. Have you forgotten about the Trade System, ROBLOX? The one you said would be coming out “soon” two, three months ago? In my oppinion, this should be your main focus and should be treated as such.

  35. You guys broke and ruined Roblox Studio 1.0 “Build” mode. It longer works right and now building a game a whole lot harder for me, thank a lot! >:(

    • i think build mode was intended for singleplayer,and the EDIT mode was for using the studio and testing it

  36. i have 5 things to say when will the water wedges come out when will the exploding walls and metal bent and such can u make the ropes and when will teh trade system come out oh and one thing u guys should make a thing where when u go onto roblox studio u can go to comfig place then like click a button that says *Make Script* and u can make a script save it into a model and not even have to go into the game to make it and it already puts it into the game it will make roblox alot LESS laggy *dont say i have a bad computer edit mode just dont work well for me*

  41. This is a must.
    I hate having to go into ROBLOX studio to get to all of the tools in build mode, and the terrain plug in is not there when you play in build mode, so you have to go to edit mode.
    The only way you can get to build mode with terrain is by having to go on test, then “Start server” and when you try to save, it saves to your files, not ROBLOX
    I AM SO ANGRY
    messing around with futile updates when you should be focusing on the building side of ROBLOX, that’s what it is about.

  43. I hate it when i go swimming in the water because my hats make me to heavy so i sink but my friend floats cause they have 1 hat

    • That’s the point of the water. In real life, you would sink with alot of hats and stuff.

  46. the water dosent work in studio, but its the first time ive ever seen water in roblox and i can put water in regular build mode

  47. I hate the water because it’s only on the terrain. It should be a function to insert into a brick too. You should fix editing places for Windows 7 users.

    Well…it wasn’t…but…

    I can’t stop thinking of some other features like the wardrobe GUI, the trading system nearly done and well…basically every feature shoved to the side.

  51. the water is cool but theres a glitch with it if you c-frame it with a normal block the blockgoes mad and starts jumping around

    Just Improve it by adding blue gui and air bubble to make it more realistic!

    And one other thing…

  54. I really like the water a lot. If you could make some of it like a wedge or ramp going up or down (for hills and such) then that would be cool too.

    • I suppose water wedges would be cool, yet hard to make. Maybe just cFrame the normal block?

  56. You know, ROBLOX is still laggy as heck for no reason at all even in places with litteraly nothing in them.

    • Sorry, Liz, I hate to break it to you, but it’s your computer. If you want a good cheap computer, go for Vista. If you are aiming for performance with building and scripting, get Windows 7 or 8 Beta.

    • And if you’re using a newest PC make sure your system is clean Eg no Spyware, virus, bad programmes the eat up your system resources.

  60. what about universes? they were making it but it seems they forgot…. :(
    i was really looking forward to it……..

    • Believe me, Co. Universes will eventually get made, but in a data base with hundreds of thousands of users, it’s sort of hard to pull off that sort of thing. Besides, right now they’re focused on making optimization for Studio.

    • I know,they totally forgotted universes.I was really looking into that too :(
