Ever since we made the request for your ROBLOX “Top Three,” we’ve been combing through the feedback and responding to your most insightful comments and pertinent questions. This week, John Shedletsky, ROBLOX’s Creative Director and Content Lead, elaborates on a variety of topics, including our new LEGO Hero Factory Level, news on our studio mode, dynamic lighting, and more.

Rogeke15: New ROBLOX character joints ^_^

Lego Hero Factory Breakout For the LEGO Hero Factory level, which you’ll be able to try out this upcoming Monday, we created a ROBLOX character with no fewer than 14 joints using the existing ROBLOX animation system. It would be interesting to polish up our animation tools and ship them as a standard part of ROBLOX Studio – this would allow place creators the option of swapping out the default ROBLOX character with a more articulated one.

Unmaskd_RBL: ROBLOX should let players go into studio mode when people are playing in their games.

The ROBLOX content team (the super cool guys who build out official ROBLOX levels) is acutely aware that there are bugs that crop up in Lua scripts that you can only effectively debug in a multiplayer instance of the game. We think it would be very helpful to allow the creator of a level to be able to attach to a running instance of the game through ROBLOX Studio. The only technical hitch is allowing this capability to place owners, but not to potential exploiters. We think we have a good idea for how to accomplish this.

Lighting

RBX_crazyman32: I’m still in favor of dynamic lighting.

So are we! Our current graphics feature push revolves around allowing users to have 200-700k parts in their levels with zero lag (we may have some early demos of this to show off here on the blog in the next several weeks). After we complete that, we plan to move onto materials and lighting.

Ryan123777: CFrame plugin built into ROBLOX Studio.

When people ask for CFraming tools to be built into Studio, I think they are asking for several different capabilities. First, they want to be able to drag/rotate/translate parts precisely. Second, they want to be able to position parts inside of each other without regard for collision geometry. Third, they probably want a way to weld these parts together so that it is not necessary to anchor them. This preserves the capability for them to be destroyed via explosions or to be used in mobile platforms (like vehicles). All these capabilities will come to Studio in the relatively near future.

NonstopEpicRBLX: Better uploading quality when it comes to decals.

I chatted with this user a bit more over twitter – the basic idea is that he is retexturing hats and needs more resolution. He’s also using decals (presumably large ones) to texture blocks in-game. ROBLOX internally downsizes large images that users upload to 256 x 256 pixels. We do this now for two reasons: to conserve bandwidth (so assets load quickly) and also so that players on low-end graphics hardware don’t exhaust their texture memory. For some tasks, like creating custom skyboxes or GUI images, 256 x 256 is not enough resolution. At some point we will address this with the option to upload at custom resolution when necessary, but it’s not something that we are working on at the moment.

powers Cowbear16: Built-in admin commands so that a game’s owner can ban/kick other users easily.

You are going to be psyched – the content team is building something like this right now. We’re going to make it an optional add-in to any place you build using ROBLOX Studio. The exact mechanism is still to be determined, but we think that god powers will be very popular with our place builders.

Wildphillie: Sword fight tournament. You choose users for a 5v5 death match (Anti teamkill).

We’ve been talking for a while about a similar idea. Basically we would allow groups to Knight Sword Icon play versus each other in specific games and possibly earn prizes for winning. For instance, your group challenges another group to a game of ROBLOX Base Wars. Each group pays 100 tickets (or some custom amount) to launch the challenge. The winning group gets all the tickets added to their treasury. From here they can use it to buy equipment, bling out their group page, launch new group challenges, or possibly even pay out members. All the details are obviously to be decided, but I think the general idea is a good one. 

Koopapara: You could do a app kinda thing, where you could change what things you get in your settings.

This is a great idea. For the past 6 months, I’ve been trying to make the My ROBLOX page the place to go on ROBLOX.com if you want to see everything that has happened since you last visited the site. Right now there is no really great way to find out if any of your favorite places have been updated by the creator, or if there are new items on sale that you might want to purchase, or to locate games that a large number of your friends are playing. In the future all this information will be much more readily available – possibly through an interface similar to what you have proposed.

  1. About the new 14-joints, it would be better if we can make the movement according to the speed, for example. If my character has walk speed 16, It should be walking but if it’s high like 20 or 24, it it should be running. I hope you get what I mean and I hope you add this to the new 14-joints body, or let’s say, it’s name will be ROBLOXian 4.0?

  3. An option to remove Core GUI for better FPS game play. But of course, pressing ESC will still bring up the menu, but there will be no GUI button.

  4. Can u plz fix the connection problem because when I play Base Wars, people kill me when I cannot see them, and when they walk they stay in one place for a minute. EVERY GAME IS LIKE THIS!

  5. I like the group treasury thing where you can pay out on the people in the group. I like that, so like the donater’s groups can donate that way instead of them being bc to make a t-shirt for them to buy,. Plus this thing should be for all and not for just the bc’ers.

  6. I can’t believe they’re actually going with more joints on characters. If it’s just for a specific movement, such as kneeling- fine. But for walking, it would look horrible on our characters.

    It’s really annoying; especially since my ideas are usually a lot more better than any other comments.
    Like for example: bring back the auto-hide feature in Studiov2 AND the moveable Main Menu.

  9. We need to make hats for groups so we can BUY them instead of taking our hats off and walking on a hat spawn which MOST group games don’t have

  11. I was thinking about a reply system for groups and such. I hate putting @this and that. The replies could go in our notifications. But it might not work because a lot of people do not check their notifications.

  12. Roblox should make an upgrade to the groups/party feature by allowing said categories to talk to each other like ‘Ventrilo’.

  13. Add a place where you can see people you have recently played with, so people could see who they were playing with

  14. Here’s my top three suggestions!

    1) Stereoscopic 3D display and sound, with an option to toggle the 3D display.

    2) Anti-aliased graphics, just to make things look smoother.

    3) Motion blurs, so people can see what is moving when a screenshot is taken, and to make it look awesome.

  17. I think it would be handy if players in-game could have nicknames assigned to them as part of their account, changeable under account settings. This would replace their name in-game but not online, therefore eliminating the need to change their actual url, etc, but still allowing those who dislike their username to appear to have a different name. Their nickname would appear in quotation marks under their true name in the profile page, and the leaderboard, when their name is clicked on, will display their true name.
    Think about it, please?
    It’s an easier alternative then tons of users wanting to change their usernames, I assume.

    • This is a great idea! But how about if you could change nicknames in game too! That way you could use your nickname as your role play name too. Might be kind of fun.

      2. Please, make us scripts be able to make a new script and putting info into it.
      Example:

      I am sure ROBLOX Scripters will be pleased with this. :0

  20. A NBC Group’s not to fancy but not to unfancy. Make it where NBC people can also have a group but number the people who can join or make it diffrent or also make it the same. Just NBC people should have more options.

    • It is out for Linux (not Ubuntu version), but you have to have the Windows skin [Graphical Interface] loaded on it….That’s it, really. So you can play it with Linux, but not just Linux. You need the Windows version of Linux Hardprinted into it. (Linux is the Core Computer Program that people who make Graphical User Interfaces use to program, edit, and run them)

  22. How about, We can invite a few people to help us build in roblox studio mode? Like a personal server kind of, but for roblox studio. Sometimes I need help building and I have friends who are good builders, it would be nice if they could help me

    • Ya a non-scripting version of the studio. A Personnal Server Advanced? Just building no scripting cuz that many people working on scripts would be acward.

      • I would consider multiple people working on scripts at the same time very helpful. I do it with other people all the time at a synced website where we can all type and share ideas.

    • Good idea! Ya cause i don’t know how to script but i have a friend that does. That would make building a place together easier.

    • This is a great idea and I thought about this ever since I joined roblox in 2009 and didn’t know much about roblox and how to make games. This feature would allow veterans to help other people with the basics and teach new users more effectively in areas like advanced building and scripting. This would be extremely helpful for user who would like to learn to script because then a good scripter could teach them in studios and allow them to see the code and result of the code at the same time. I really hope roblox considers this idea and I’m going to bring it up again in the next user feedback.

  23. An option to have a box system you can put in your place, you click on the system and then you have to type in a word for admin, and you can have an option to kick or not kick. For example you go to the system and you type in the word “host” you get admin, because that is the word you need to get admin.

  26. Roblox Please Find A way to remove the lag maybe get a new roblox engine? or something because some games focus on speed and you lose speed with lag.I think the new graphics Could solve the problem but you should do something to remove the lag currently

  28. A player investing feature where players get to invest in games by buying stock that the creator of the game sells. The creator gets robux from the people who buy the stock directly from him and the creator should be able to decide how much each stock’s begining value is and how many he distributes

  29. Well heres my idea , i think that we should be able to have a “Play Solo” Option without actualy letting them copy the game. Solo play , not build mode. I saw some cool games , such as a Very very old game (that doesnt exist anymore) By Twinmold , “Resident evil 4″ It was really good but for some reason you always lost connection to those servers , so he was forced to allow Solo mode , and the place got stolen. so yeah Solo games , or “Only solo” games. on the server list we could see a red text ” 136 Users are playing in Solo ” so we still get our front page.

  30. I think making a feature so Builders Club members could sell models is a good idea. This way we could have more to our BC benefits. Anyone can give models away but only BC’s can SELL them.

    • They used to have a sell model feature but i think they removed it because people would buy models then put them in free models. If there was away to know who made the model first and keep others from putting it in free models (Like a model admin control pannel) I want to sell models too.

    • don’t you think BC already has enough benefits? If anything, i think roblox should start focusing more on NBC players for once

  34. There also could be someting like mutile players can click build on a place and they all can edit something but its not multiplayer but its way better than now, something like a play solo button but then its saves to the owner’s place and only the owner can allow people to edit his game

  36. I would like a new feature where people can make their own faces, all users can use the feature and BC only can sell, it’s sort of like a decal, that you can sell and put on your head.

  39. The new water in the new graphics is so cool! Its like its real water inside your screen! But will it give the game lag?

    • I’m guessing that it will give you very miniscule ammounts of lag, as it is a HighScalability brick [So when it touches another Hi-Scal brick it makes them render as one malformed brick] and it does have scripts in it to: 1.)move you X, Anti-X Y, Anti-Y, Z, and Anti-Z axis-wise, 2.)bouyancy, and 3.)the Decals…

  41. For games with badges, I think it would be cool if we could only see badges we haven’t earned yet. So once we earn a badge, we don’t see it on the game page. That would make it easier to keep track of badges, like on your Hero Factory game!

  42. roblox is changing alot…me being from late 2008 roblox i think we should have a second site like say http://www.roblox.com/classic/ or something where its just the regular blocks and stuff without all the new stamper and thing like a copy of 2010 or 2011 roblox as those were the best years on roblox oh and im all up for roblox BRINGING BACK INSERT SERVICE!!!!IT WAS THE AWESOMEST GEAR EVER!!!!! AND IT WAS MY FAVORITE GAME GENRE EVER!!! YES IM CALLING INSERT WARS A GENRE!!! sorry for yelling heh heh but i miss insert wars i had an insert obby planned where you had to find a model that would help you get past the current obstacle…but i guess with bytecode gone most of the models in free model section are all kinda broken so this dream will never be fulfilled … thank you for your time my rant on insert tools is over

  43. Another suggestion i have for ROBLOX is more of a request you said that there may be a crafting system on gear and hats and things, i would love for that to come out sooner than later. i have lots of stuff i dont use and would love to have a reason to have them

  44. I think that roblox should partner with microsoft or sony to get an xbox live or playstation network version of roblox. Not oly would more people play but the control system would be familiar to new players and old alike. Minecraft did it why not roblox.

  45. There should be a option to either instead of 10 tix. You can change it to robux. Any anyway 10 tix equals 1 robuxso yeah.

    • Well, like in real there exist a value of money like sometimes robux is expensive to buy but if you sell it you have profit same as tix so robux isn’t equal to tickets!

  46. Admins, you will probably ignore this suggestion, as you have lots to read through. But I think, we should be able to atach ROBLOX videos to our proifle. The way this would work is:

    -Menue
    -Record Video
    -You record the video the same way you do to take youtube videos
    -When done recording, you have an option, upload to profile, or upload to YouTube.

    Simple and easy, this feature would be avalible to all members, weather non-builders club, or outrageous-builders club, but mabey it could be like games and groups, where everybody can have one, but, the higher the bc the more videos you can have. Mabey it could cost a small amount of robux, at the max, 100.

    Of cource, the videos would have to follow certain rules, atleast, they would have to follow the normal roblox rules. Either a moderater would review the video before its avalible, or there would be a report button.

    This, would, let people get a feel for the persons personality, and, be a fun opertunity for those without YouTube accounts to show off there videos. Adding a video to your profile would be optional.

    So thanks for reading, admins if you see this I hope you consider this. Thats my idea, and how it would work.

  47. I think maybe a jello type of material, like when you walk into it, it will react and start to jiggle. Also maybe someone will make a script that if like you walk into the jello or fall on it you will be sucked in and they can decided whether you can move around or just float to the bottom.

  48. Being able to set the lighting only on certain parts of the map, such as adding black fog in a haunted environment while keeping the surrounding areas normal would be nice.

  50. Roblox, it is SOOOO annoying how I buy a 750R$. I sell it for 1000R$ somebody buys it. I only get 700R$…I sold it for 250 more R$ than it costs!! I still LOSE 50R$….I should get all the 1000R$!! Please change it so whoever sells it gets the amount they sell it for >:O

  53. @Shedletsky One day i was wondering on something.Maybe sometime in the future,robloxians could look more realistic.I dont know about this idea,but it seems that the characters are already changing.maybe this idea could be robloxian 6.0?Who knows.Roblox is changing alot.Its not a bad thing though.The new theme song was cool,but i especially like the old roblox theme.I was wondering if the roblox staff could make a new roblox theme,as in new i mean like remixing the old roblox theme to make it sound new as in how roblox is changing slowly and how roblox is still roblox and its just the way we like it.

    Please add a feature so you can create custom faces using the same process as making a t-shirt, This would be a BC feature but it would let NBC use it once. Also Mabey A New program Called Roblox Editor Could Be made so you can make Faces, Shirts, T-Shirts, Pants, and Decals easy

  60. I believe that the group combat shouldnt use roblox made weapons, i think this should be player customized as well. I think there should be a point system that you could put points into different statistics, like rate of fire, recoil, accuracy, damage, etc. But if you put alot of points into one thing, you may have to give up something else, like if you put in a lot of damage, you may have to add more recoil or have to make your gun fire slower.

    • Or there is a filter that filters the extremely high damage/fire rate out of the script so groups can’t cheat

  61. I think that you should make it so you can’t see smoke and fire through bricks…Like a chimney, got an open part you can see the fire but if its surrounded by bricks, the fire and smoke doesnt go through the bricks…

    • AND it can be funneled into a more compact and opaque form of smoke. It could also lose its Speed of going up every few seconds ex: Smoke has a rising speed of 50; 5 seconds later: smoke has a rising speed of 37-38.5; 5 seconds later: smoke has a velocity of 25.4; etc; etc. (every 5 seconds the riseVelocity decreases by 25%)

  62. Add ramp type bricks like at a skate park so you could put 4 of them in four corners so it would be like a brick with a empty circle in teh middle.

  63. I think the property “Pitch” of the instance “Sound” should be removed and be replaced with two properties named “Speed” and “Deepness” (or a better name). First of all, the property “Speed” will make a sound play at a certain speed without changing how “deep” the sound sounds, and the property of “Deepness” will make a sound play at a certain “deepness” without changing how quick the sound is playing.

    I also think that we should be able to make sounds so we would be able to find the sound(s) we need or make our own so every place’s sound(s) will sound like it should be.

    For the end, I think you should make NPCs, like for example zombies, be able to go to a position of it detects a player on the other side of a wall so zombies won’t be stuck with their faces looking at walls and not moving at all.

  64. A way to have two people own a place. Like, you click on it and it says “By [name here] and [name here]” and shows both their avatars on it. Both of them can edit the place as they like, and it appears in both their “Places” sections and counts as one of their active places. When someone visits the place, they both get a ticket.

    Or at least a way of making it so other people can edit the place itself, but not configure it. You could add usernames of people who’d be able to edit it, and when you clicked on the place, it’d say “By [name here] with help from [names here].” They may or may not receive tix for their contribution, though I personally think they should. Or the place owner could decide that. I dunno.

    Also, a similar thing with groups could be cool, so a group could have two or three leaders.

    • Exactly! Me and my brother love to build places, but we have to decide who’s page it go’s on, or if we put it on an alt, and, it really ins’t fair most of the time.

  66. More building types of bricks.
    An example would be a brick with a real hole in it that you can walk through, if its big enough. The Size of the hole would depend on the size of the brick. This would make it a lot easier to make round tunnels without having to CFrame a lot of bricks, which would would mean less lag. You could also change the type of hole that’s in it from round to square to something else. Holes would stay symmetric when changing the brick size, except for maybe the square holes since the physics of a rectangular hole would be simpler that that of an oval hole.
    Also more customizable cylinder bricks that instead of staying symmetrical when changing the size you could flatten them to make better wheels and what not.
    It would also be nice if you would make prism parts and pyramid parts work. :)

    • Thats a good idea.There is alot of lags at places usally when your at a sandbox.This idea is brilliant.Its easier trying to make a tunnel with a round hole.

  67. What Would be a good idea is and ‘Outfits’ Area in the ‘character’ section. So you can save all your outfits instead of going through you hats and clothing and gear and faces just to find a outfit,That if the outfit tab came out that would save the average robloxian 10 mins. of what he/she would of had if that didn’t come out.
