ROBLOX Launches Game Templates, Starting with CTF

CTF Game Template - ROBLOX StudioROBLOX’s Content Team has been hard at work as of late creating Game Templates, which are freely available starter levels with the nuts and bolts of a specific genre already in place. Our first template gives you the basic elements you need to build a game of the popular multiplayer shooter variety, Capture the Flag. You can find the template — and more in the near future — from the “Templates” ROBLOX user profile.

The Capture the Flag template comes set up for two teams. It includes two spawn points, two flag locations, a leaderboard, a mini-map and three weapons (assault rifle, knife and rocket launcher). It’s playable right out of the box, meaning you can immediately publish your game to ROBLOX and play it with your friends. Click here to download the CTF starter level straight to your computer, and check out this video demonstrating it:

Of course, the purpose of these templates is to let users focus their efforts on strong, well planned level designs. Here are some things to try, sorted by difficulty:

Easy

  • Spawn killing is a problem in the standard template that we’ll be addressing soon. For now, consider adding barriers or additional spawn points to keep your game more interesting.
  • Utilize the Insert Tool to add scenery, buildings, and change the time of day.
  • Add some vehicles.

Medium

  • Customize the weapons – you can change the amount of damage each weapon deals to players.
  • Install the Procedural Building Generator plugin and rapidly add or change a bunch of buildings.
  • There’s a river in the map – give it a current, so when players fall in, they’ll be washed away.
WWII - Battle For Carentan

Advanced

  • Add more weapons.
  • Add the ability to call in air-strikes.
  • Replace the entire map with your own.

We’re excited to see what ROBLOX users create using these new templates. Let us know how they work and what you come up with in our Game Design forum. In the meantime, we’ll be ironing out any bugs you experience and working on templates for additional game genres.

  1. Great. those people having trouble creating games will have trouble no more. shedletsky, helpers, you rule

  2. Wow great idea,by the way, could one of the creative directors or scripting directors teach me scripting please!

    • Not a good idea, Some scripters learn by taking places and editing the scripts [Of course, unlike copiers they give credit]

  3. I like the idea of starter templates, however, I don’t like the fact that they are made with voxels (terrain/stamper tool elements). If you just gave a script/GUI/tool pack, that would have been great, but instead, you had to make a starter map which everyone will use and it encourages the Stamper Tool. I think that if you stopped promoting building with the Stamper Tool, ROBLOX would have many more much better games.

    So if you just make:

RPG Template: Level/XP/Gold Script, Tools, Inventory, Easy-to-use Dialog Quest System, and Easy-to-use monsters (which you can modify the level of the monster, the XP it gives you, and the rarity of the drops).

FPS Template: 3-5 weapons, Easy-to-use level editor, and some AIs with guns.

CTF Template: What you have is awesome, but no map.

Obby Template: Stage script, Lava Bricks, Can’tCollide Bricks, regular bricks, Easy-to-use Checkpoint bricks, and assorted obby elements.

  4. Why dont you add these maps to the Default Level thing when you reset your place on Configure Place?

  5. Not sure if I like the idea of realeasing ENTIRE templates… Because now games are not gonna differ too much from the templates.

    • The top builders and scripters can delete some stuff and add many buildings of their own, as added in the Advanced bit.

  6. With each new update such as terrain and this, Roblox is bringing our creative ability down by making it easier to make lame games.

  7. WOW! love the vid of shedletsky :). some people may think this is just doing the work for the people, but i think it is helping them. im gonna try to read the scripts and see if i can learn anything new.

  8. Can someone help me with this? I opened up roblox studio and tried to open it from my desktop but it always says failed to open document, can someone help me with this?

  9. Hey, I have a map, and I’m willing to give it to that profile. Just go to my profile, and check my game. Then, have the account Shedletsky send me a friend request so I know to make is uncopylocked.

  10. Look at half of the games on the front page :
    They are :

    A. Copied or made with models
    B. Show a lack of work
    C. Pointless to play

I’m not saying that all of them go under this statement, but most of them are. ROBLOX was supposed to give people creativity, but instead, it washed it down with the bad examples. Now, with this, it will take them even more down.

A very, very constructive comment from MAN

    • I think that if you just re-design the capture the flag template to create it as a game of your own, then it will be much better than the basics that they give you. But this is just to help you start out in creating games, its only meant for that, really. I think its a good thing that Roblox is trying to help users create fun games. I just hope that everyone doesn’t copy the ones who make a good game, but sadly, it happens.

  11. This is amazing, keep up with the building templates and everything else. I love that you want people to get “More Involved” in building. So keep up the amazing work ROBLOX!

  12. That is really amazing. It’ll really help new builders design, think of and create new games.

  13. I think this is a really great idea for users who do not really know how to build.
But I also think you guys should also hurry on the new iPad version of Roblox.

    • I actually want to make a zombie game, I could use this to change around the things and make a perfect map with weapons, and what not.

  14. Well, this is just okay… Although your map making skills aren’t that good. (You didn’t have much time to make it though!)

  15. Really cool. Well, it’s kinda “too” easy to make so… Grab the weaps and make a completely new map instead of for corners – why not 8?
