What It’s Like to be Part of the ROBLOX Team

ROBLOX Office

Take a walk through ROBLOX’s headquarters in downtown San Mateo, Calif., and you’ll see collaborative, open workspaces, desks littered with computer hardware and gadgets, multiple kitchens stocked with snacks, and a lot of coffee. In other words, you’ll see the tropes of a modern-day technology startup.

But what you may not see, at a glance, are the intangibles; the unique attitudes and values we hold in the utmost regard.

A couple weeks ago, ROBLOX’s CEO, David Baszucki, gave a brief talk at one of our weekly, all-hands company lunch meetings. He made an inspiring statement that cuts to the chase of what it’s actually like to work at ROBLOX and the company’s core values.

ROBLOX Team ShirtAct like a CEO.

No, that doesn’t mean every ROBLOX employee should try to run the company. It means every employee is in charge of their work. We want everyone who works here to be invested in – even concerned about – their projects and ROBLOX’s future. We want everyone to have a drive to contribute to the greater ROBLOX whole, whether that’s through improving ROBLOX.com, the ROBLOX game and building experiences, ROBLOX’s brand awareness, our human resources operations or something else. Thinking and acting like a CEO ties right into ROBLOX’s core values.

Self-organize: If you’re a CEO, you have to leverage self-organization to identify problems and come up with solutions. No one is going to breathe down your neck to keep things moving forward.

Self-organization is finding it in yourself to identify problems and find creative, inventive solutions. It’s the most core of our core values, and something we even extend to our community of ROBLOX users – the top ROBLOX game developers use self-organization to get things done, without the pressure of an overlord, and succeed when they work all the way through the project to a good solution.

ROBLOX GDC BoothGet stuff done: As CEO, you need to exercise your smarts to get things done quickly.

At ROBLOX, results don’t just appear out of thin air. Getting stuff done (and ideally quickly) requires that each employee uses their smarts and tenacity. We occasionally toss around a phrase coined by VP of Web Engineering and Operations Keith Lucas: “be compassionately relentless.” This is the idea of never giving up on seeing things through to completion, while supporting your teammates’ needs to do the exact same thing.

You own your projects, so you have the responsibility — and receive the reward — of seeing them through from concept to completion.

Work hard: You don’t become CEO by being lazy.

Hard work is self-explanatory. Staying focused and working hard is part of working at ROBLOX. (That makes the happy hour gatherings, weekly game nights, baseball game outings and other assorted events a whole lot more rewarding.)

Respect the customer: CEOs have to respect the customer; that’s how they retain business and keep their company afloat.

Much of what ROBLOX employees do has a direct impact on millions of users around the world. It almost goes without saying that with each of our actions we should be mindful of the effects on our dedicated and passionate users. We value doing more than just considering our customers; we respond, empathize and do our best to delight them.

Be inspiring to work with: CEOs need to be able to rally people and be part of the team.

Not everyone is the next Richard Branson or Steve Jobs. Still, being an inspiring, team-playing individual is something we value at ROBLOX. And if you demonstrate leadership and some passion for your craft – among our other core values – we’ll give you a chance to take on additional responsibilities.

Our vision is to become the leader in user-generated gaming for all ages, around the world. It’s going to take the help of smart people who can leverage our core values, so we’re actively hiring throughout the rest of 2012. If your values line up with ours, and digging into cutting-edge technology to create something great and unique appeals to you, check out our Jobs section. We’d love to hear from you.

Your ideas will be valued, your projects will be interesting and you’ll own your work, from conception to completion. Help us usher the era of user-generated gaming.

  1. When I’m 18, I hope to be part of the Team. Just Five more years, and they will be seeing me (:

  2. I might get a job there one day. Just one question do they teach you how to script too and do you get paid real money? I heard they pay robux only. -.-

    • Of course it is a real job! Where do you think all that money that they make from advertisements, BC, TBC, OBC, Gift Cards, and Buying R$’s Goes? They make plenty of money, which they distribute between helping the roblox community and paying themselves.

    • Even though being trapped in a room with ungodly amounts of snacks sounds great… These people are very VERY hard workers programming is not so easy when ROBLOX has to many people logging on and joining and not to be insulting A LOT of math and computer skills are required, And being CEO makes you responsible for every little mishap that happens.

To get to the point, Its not as easy as you think.

  3. Even though I’m not old enough, I still want to get up to that level to see all of the employees working their hardest to improve Roblox. This is my dream job.

    • I’m now a game maker in Java, and still love coding on the ROBLOX studio! I use Ubuntu (Linux) and I am really annoyed that ROBLOX is written in C, C# or C++.
I so wish in the near time future, they will make a Linux distribution. I would be so happy!
Happy days to those who play ROBLOX, and hope you guys have fun.

  4. Today, I am officially ABLE to work at the company of ROBLOX.
I’d probably get a job there, in the future.
But right now, I need to focus on work and college.

  5. I’ve been on roblox since 2008 and I think it would be a priviledge to work at roblox. I love to build and script, and I might even send an application to them when I turn 18.

    Send me trades btw!

  6. People play minecraft and that`s okay, but THIS makes me happy. Really happy. Made for kids my age, roblox is the most fun, active, safe online community. Hands down.

  7. roblox is awsome you can make your own t shirt
anything you name it happens you can be anything build anything!

    • yeah you can make T-shirts, but there not good. all they do is hide what you have underneath it!

  8. I want to work at roblox, to make the game I love even better than the amazing game it is today.

  9. Qbasic is great to become a beginning programmer, I mean, Look at John, He is one of the heads of ROBLOX!

  10. I am planing on getting a degree in Computer Science hopefully be able to work here for a couple of years and start my own game business.

    • I’m definitely to young but, I have been playing roblox for 3 or so years now and I dream to work there someday, because I really love coding, and I think roblox, Is probably the best game out there, Period.

    • I would LOVE to work at ROBLOX. i am a huge computer nerd and ROBLOX is the best thing that ever happened to me.

    • I’ve played ROBLOX for quite some time now. If I worked at ROBLOX, I’d most enjoy being a forum moderator.

    • I plan to someday work at the ROBLOX company too. I would do whatever it takes to get the required degree to have the privilege to work at such a fantastic company. ROBLOX is my dream job , Period.

  11. I would love to work at ROBLOX but I’m too young and live in New York.

  12. I plan on working at the ROBLOX HQ in my future, I’m currently 16 and in Louisiana so it will take a while for me to get the money, age, and transportation for it, as well as I plan on going to a technical school to further my learning on technology. After all of that is complete ROBLOX’s staff can expect me on their doorstep ASAP asking for a job application. It is my dream and I plan on seeing it happen, by doing whatever it takes.

    Christbru (01)
    ROBLOXian LUA programmer

    • I would really love to work there but i am way to young yet a very experienced technical person so i might get the job because I’m good at fixing and creating stuff through technology

  13. Awesome :) . I might wanna work with roblox when i grow up :) P.S. Does the roblox staff get to help with making gear and hats?

  14. I live in England but I would love to work here!
And I have a question: If you walked down the street would crowds of kids come up to you and ask for an autograph? (I know I would!)

  15. I would love to work here, but I am a little to young to work at ROBLOX HQ. One day My dream is to work there…

  16. I think I’m able to apply. I’m old enough and I have been a ROBLOX member ever since September 2008.

    • You can’t just apply, you must have the right college education. Game design isn’t something you can get a job for with a high school diploma, you have to actually major in a college course. It’s also a very limited field, and tons of people are out there that will or might pass you in the talents. Jobs are not simple to get, unless you are working at a low end job.

      • Actually, programming jobs are becoming more common. You won’t be able to get it with a high school diploma, though. According their jobs page (jobs.roblox.com), they want a minimum of a Bachelors degree in CS or equivalent for all engineering positions. The senior positions require even more (several years of experience in a production environment).

  17. If the roblox team is reading this well, I am on roblox a lot! But I’m very compassionate about roblox I’m not a great builder yet , I’m inspired by what people can make with ROBLOX I want to help some how… Although I cant work there yet doesn’t mean I can’t help and don’t give me that ” just help by reporting” no, I won’t take that any more let me by a moderator or something like that! I WANT TO HELP SO LET ME!

    • dude chill bro pony if they let random people be moderators then they would be FLOODED with TONS of PMs about being a moderator.

  18. Hey ROBLOX, try to be friends with mojang, they might help you on your mobile roblox game you guys are working on.

    • That my be a good idea, they did it on mincefraft, the Pocket Edition, I guess they can do it with us too, right?

      • True, but with all of Roblox’s personal scripts there would be thousands of compatibility checks. Like in-game GUI’s and stuff. Would be hard to use swords/tools, but they could make it for PlayStationVista; Maybe.

      • yes and they can help you in mobile as well as the you can try for xbox 360 as minecraft is on xbox 360

    • 1.Friendship won’t help nearly as much as a business proposal.

2.Minecraft pocket edition is totally different. It is meant to be a mobile port from a java game. Roblox runs on c++ mainly, with integrated lua.

Long story short, they need a completely different set of professionals for the mobile team.

  19. I wish I could join.I talked to some moderators, and guys, it’s a job you apply for.You don’t get a message over states that you’re invited to be a moderator.Keep an eye out on ROBLOX Jobs.

  20. They’re not just going to hire you because you’re on roblox a lot. You need to have some kind of skill to be able to work there unless your a beta tester then most of it don’t require a lot of skill.

    • I do have master skill on making Meshes. Seriously. But retexturing.. I still need to work on a bit.

  21. Hey ROBLOX Team, that reminds me. Next summer I am going to proably be coming to visit you guys, so I could get that job on making Hats that I wanted to do for years.

  22. Hey ROBLOX, I would love to be part of the ROBLOX team. I am on all the time, except for when I’m busy. :)

  23. I would love to I am really good at computer. Might think I’m a little too young but I know a lot of things

  24. You can’t be on the ROBLOX team without:
    a) a resume
    b) being 18+
    c) coming for an interview. You need to live in San Francisco place where they are.

    Have fun.

  25. I hope to become a professional programmer someday, and I already have Lua down thanks to Roblox. Also thanks to Roblox, I took a class at DigiPen and learned some C++, but sadly their software doesn’t like my computers. And I recently dove into trying to make Minecraft mods and learn Java (I managed to use a random number generator for randomly chosen items for chickens to drop), and I learned some XML from looking into Roblox application files, and learned a bit of Python from a tutorial. If I were to continue learning more in each of these languages and possibly even more than that, then I will have a good chance at becoming a programmer if I work hard in school. It would be nice to work at Roblox and be a dev at some point in time.

  26. I’ll send you me Resume when I get out of College. I’ll take specific Technological Classes, and I hope to work in this calm and fun atmosphere. ;)

  27. “Get stuff done” “Use your smarts” I’m in 8th grade and I’m taking Pre-Calc. Is that a good place to be to be in a position to be with the ROBLOX employees someday?

  28. I would love to join the ROBLOX team, but I’m to young and live far far away from where ROBLOX HQ is. :C

  29. Maybe one day I’ll get to work for roblox and experience it myself. Pretty close to going to college.

  30. I like about the team is that they really work hard never give up on anything and they really seem fine workers to me ;) I hope I can be one of them since I’ve signed up.
