Roblox Featured on Devmaster.net

Roblox is featured on Devmaster.net today. Thanks to everyone who participated in my impromptu photo op yesterday.

This photo op was set in a slightly modified version Grey City by Robloxian EarlGrey. I took several pictures, and chose to use the one where are92 just bloxxed me (because I just had to fit the Godbuilder sign in there).

There will be more photo ops in the future. Keep a look out!

Travelogue: Roblox Museum

Hello. This is the first in a series of Travelogue articles, where an explorer visits a place and then writes about their journeys.

Today I’m exploring the Roblox Museum. This will be a seek peek for most of you, as it is currently not open to the general public (though that may change soon).

In the museum lobby, I encountered this amazing dinosaur skeleton. No one was around to stop me, so I climbed onto the display to get a better picture. Rar! The lobby is a very large room. There is a short hallway that goes to the cafeteria, an entrance to the lower floor exhibit hall, and an elevator to the second floor.

I enter the first floor exhibit hall. There is a moving walkway, which slowly carries me past a series of dioramas commemorating some of Robloxia’s greatest builders. I took some pictures - see if you can recognize them all.

Here is a nice mini-map of the Drome Racers level.

This exhibit belongs to one of Robloxia’s most prolific developers, surrounded by his inventions.

TNT in a museum!? Is that safe?

The famous desk of Builderman. I feel humbled looking upon it.

The second floor exhibit hall is filled with iconic artifacts from popular Roblox places.

I feel like I’m in an Andy Warhol. Everyone loves Bloxflakes!

Wallowing in those Bloxflakes made me hungry, so I headed down to the museum cafeteria, where you canget some decent grub. The floor is made out of glass, and you can see mysterious critters swimming around below your feet. After a long day of exploration, I head home.

Write the Next Roblox Travelogue

Do you want to write the next Roblox Travelogue article? Think you’ve found an undiscovered corner of Robloxia that demands recognition? We’re accepting submissions from qualified authors. Are you qualified? You need to be able to:

  • Write an interesting story about your journey
  • Have good grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Be able to supply a couple of photographs from your journey (i.e. take some good-looking screenshots)

If you can do this, email an article to Roblox Travelogue (send photos as attachments - or just send a Word doc with everything in one file). Only high-quality articles will be published - this is the company dev journal, after all :-). All authors will get credit and a link back to their profile page.

"How do I add weapons to my map?"

The #1 most asked question of all time has now been answered for all eternity. Since the new release, adding weapons to your place is easy and fun.

Step by step article on Roblox Wiki.

If you can see how to insert a weapon into your map, you can probably also figure out how to insert a nice custom skybox (hint: see that Skybox tab in the Toolbox?).

One of the nice things about adding weapons to your map in this way is that if we later improve those weapons, you will get the new weapon without needing to update your level. For this reason, it is suggested that even people used to copying scripts around use the weapons from the Toolbox unless you are doing something special.

Advertising on Roblox

There has been some discussion in the community about our move to put ads on Roblox.

We’re experimenting with ads for several reasons:

  • Ads are a good way to monetize a site while keeping it free.
  • We are validating our per user ad revenue model.

In the future we plan to sell membership to a Builder’s Club that will prevent ads from appearing when you play Roblox (among many other things).

As you can imagine, there are many ways that sites such as Roblox  generate revenue, including advertising, memberships, digital economies, etc etc. We welcome your feedback as we continue to incorporate various revenue generating components into the site. It is our belief that Roblox should be remain free to play for the casual user, while we provide premium services to those who want more. Casual users help to support the site by viewing ads, whereas dedicated users can join the Builder’s Club and support Roblox more directly (in return we will gladly remove ads).

Roblox is a business.  Hardware has gotten cheaper, but it is not free. Roblox has a team of full-time developers, without whom there would be no bi-monthly updates, new features, or bug fixes. Telamon has student loans to pay, Matt has to maintain his race car, Erik has kids to feed, and Builderman is afraid of losing his place in line for a customized double-decker Airbus 380.

Paintballs and Pointy Things

A new release was put out today. Here’s what we got:

New features

  • Builder’s Club (early testing)
  • Physics performance improvements
  • Cool new game server backend
  • Sword weapon
  • Paintball weapon
  • Seven custom skyboxes added to Toolbox
  • Tools insertable from Toolbox

Builder’s Club

Builder’s Club membership grants a variety of privileges. It gives you five places instead of one. It stops ads from displaying on the site. In the future, we will be adding more features to the Builder’s Club. Right now we are testing the BC with a limited pool of players, in the future we will sell membership.

Physics Improvements

Large moving objects should lag less (eight times less, in matter of fact). Collision detection was also improved 20-30%. These physics improvements may reduce the amount of lag that occurs during CPU-intense simulation situations (such as when a huge explosion happens). We will see.

Cool Game Servers

You can’t tell right now, but we took serious steps this release towards the day when you will never see a “server not available” message.

Sword Weapon

Who doesn’t like swords? They will be added to at least one of the official Roblox maps tomorrow. There are two sword moves that you can do. One click makes you guy slash with the sword. A double click makes your guy lunge. Lunging does triple damage.

Paintball Weapon

This weapon shoots paint everywhere. It doesn’t do much damage, but it is fun to mess around with.

Toolbox Improvements

One of the most frequently asked questions to Builderman is “How do I put weapons in my place???” Well, today we finally have a good answer. In Roblox Studio go to the Toolbox, select the Tools, and click the tool you want to add to your map. That’s it. You will get the option to either put the tool in the StarterPack, so that everyone entering your game starts with the tool, or you can insert it into the Workspace, where it will lay on the ground until someone picks it up. Another thing you can now insert from the Toolbox are skyboxes - check it out. One click and you can change the sky in your place.
