Introducing MEGA Places

First announced at the ROBLOX RALLY, MEGA places have gone live on ROBLOX.com!image

What is a MEGA Place?

MEGA places support a lot more simultaneous players than classical ROBLOX places do. They are still highly experimental. We have done tests of MEGA places with up to 100 players, but for this first release MEGA places will support 30 players.

MEGA Place Facts

  • MEGA places currently support 30 players per instance.
  • This number will increase over time.
  • MEGA places get roughly 2-3x the compute power per game – so they can handle more moving parts, scripts, and players without lagging.
  • All players can play MEGA places
  • Creating a MEGA place is a BC Beta feature – something we are testing at the moment with our Builders Club members. This is largely because the beefier computers we use to host MEGA places have higher cost for ROBLOX Corp.

How to Make a Mega Place

It is now possible to control the number of players that your place supports from the Place Configuration page. Classic places can have between 6-20 players each. MEGA places get what ever the current MEGA place player limit is (always at least 30, but in the future it could be 50 or 100).

The Future

The ROBLOX Team, especially RoboYZ, is continuing to optimize both our server and client code to support more players in MEGA places. Here’s a sneak peek at what is coming…

New Play With Friends Feature!

Do you ever wish you could get a group of your ROBLOX friends together and go into a place at the same time? Well now you can! We added some powerful features that help you get into games with your friends.

Here’s How It Works

Follow the leader into a gameIn the lower right of the website is the Chat interface button. After you open the Chat interface you’ll see the Party Tab! Pop it open to see the Party invitation tool. Then, invite a bunch of your friends into the Party.

Invite friends to your party
To get into a place together, all the party leader has to do is enter any game on ROBLOX and the rest of the party will be invited to follow. The game will launch for each member from the follow button!

You can keep chatting in the Party interface on the website. Also remember that you can change your Party settings at any time from the Settings tab. In some cases the game may become full and then more party members won’t be able to join. But if the leader picks out just the right spot, everyone should be able to fit!

We think this feature will make it super easy to play with your friends and move from game to game. Let us know what you think about it on our forums!

Group Theory

In some of my previous blog posts, I’ve hinted that the ROBLOX Team has an expanded vision for the future of groups that we are going to slowly be rolling out piece by piece over the next several months.

One of the first steps we are taking is to allow all ROBLOX users to declare allegiance to a primary group. Most ROBLOX players are members of many different groups. Your primary group is the one that you care the most about.

How to Declare a Primary Group

First, go to the page of any group that you are a member of.image

Click the “Make Primary” button. That’s it!

Your Primary Group Will Appear on Your Profile Page

This is great advertising for your primary group! It also says something about who you are to anyone looking at your page.

image

Your Primary Group Will Also Appear in Your Forum Posts

Fun math fact: users are injective, but not surjective on primary groups. Ask your parents, they probably won’t know what that means.

Group Relationships Feature!

We’ve released a BC Beta feature – Group Relationships. Groups can declare Allies and Enemies that will be displayed on each group’s page. This feature is just the beginning of an exciting progression of group enhancements. There are exciting things on the way!

Here is the difference between Allies and Enemies…

Allies

Group leaders can send an alliance request to another group, but the other group has to accept. It’s like a friend request. Ally requests look like this:Allies

Enemies

A group can be enemies with any other group – the declared enemy doesn’t even have to accept. When a group has declared an enemy, the receiving group leader gets a message in their Inbox.EnemiesMessage

Group leaders can share the power to make Allies and Enemies with the ranks of the group. You will be able to see the declared Allies and Enemies of each group on the right side of the group’s page. Everyone will know the associations of each group on ROBLOX!List

We hope you have fun with these features! You can talk more about these new features on our forum.
