From September 17-19, Twenty One Pilots took the virtual stage, sky, and garage with a pioneering, interactive virtual concert experience on Roblox. The five-song interactive and evolving concert captivated people from over 160 countries, with nearly 70% of attendees coming together from outside of the U.S. to kick off the band’s sold-out Takeøver Tour with an exclusive virtual concert in the metaverse where fans could choose their own setlist order for the first time! In case you missed it, a recording of the full show can be found below.

Bandmates Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun kicked off the concert with a streetside performance of their viral hit, “Saturday.” Fans brought the black and white streets to life by tossing paint-filled balloons at the stage and spraypainting the brick walls with logos and icons. Throughout the show, avatars danced to the beat with custom emotes and adorned themselves with bespoke virtual merchandise (“verch”), including more than 30 exclusive custom-designed pieces available for purchase.

As the high-fidelity experience continued, for the first time ever fans dictated the setlist by voting for the next song to follow. Over the course of the show that kicked off the artist’s sold-out Takeøver Tour, fans learned to fly as they soared around larger than life Tyler and Josh playing drums and piano during “Car Radio,” experienced anti-gravity while dancing to “The Outside,” rocked out to “Heathens” in a warehouse where they could complete challenges to grow 10x in size and knock over furniture and other items, and spun on records inside the artists’ heads in outer space during “Stressed Out.” You can check out a full version of the concert here:

Ahead of the show, users had the unique opportunity to compete in metaverse-spanning pre-concert quests involving some of the most popular experiences on Roblox — Ultimate Driving: Westover Islands, Creatures of Sonaria, and World // Zero — which pre-concert collectively had over 400 million visits and now boast nearly 500 million. These quests enabled users to earn Twenty One Pilots prizes and included portals that transported users between the pre-concert venue and the experiences spanning the Roblox metaverse in the days leading up to the concert.

To create the experience, the Warner Music Group and Roblox teams gathered to film the band’s performance. In order to mirror the artists’ movement in the metaverse, Tyler and Josh wore suits and helmets that tracked the band’s facial expressions and body movements, leading to a lifelike performance. Check out some behind-the-scenes footage from the motion capture shoot here:

Tyler and Josh are obsessed with their fans, so they made sure to take some time to server hop as their avatars ToggAndJog and JogAndTogg, meeting fans from across the globe in the metaverse. They also held an on-platform Q&A session for fans, which was available ahead of the show. In case you missed it, you can hear directly from Tyler and Josh here:

The high-fidelity experience was an immersive and creative collaboration, bringing people together through music and technology. With the Twenty One Pilots concert experience, Roblox provided the platform to allow the band to reach millions of fans at once in a hyper-immersive environment. As Tyler and Josh would say, we’re vibin’.
